How do I replace a damaged window?
One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.
First step: Take the glass out of its frame
To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.
Step 2: Clean the new glasses
Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.
Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass
Reattach the window panels to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.
Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged
When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.
Fourth step: Sealing the area
After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Choose a color that matches your walls.
Let the caulking set overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
