FAQ

Which is more difficult: being a contractor or a handyman.

Because you only need tools and yourself, being a handyman is more time-consuming than contracting. However, you must be able to manage your own workload and schedule, while contractors typically rely on subcontractors to do most of the work.

What is the best time to hire a handyman for your project?

There isn't really a "right" time to hire a handyman. You should get started as soon you can. You could save some money by waiting until after holidays. You could also pick up the telephone and call various handymen.

How often should I call a handyman?

It all depends upon the nature of your job. One handyman might be enough to do a basic job like changing a bulb or fixing a leak. If there are many remodeling tasks involved, however, you might need several handymen.

Do I need a license in order to become handyman?

To become an independent contractor in most states, you don't need to have a license (as opposed with a salaried worker). You must still meet certain requirements.

  • You must be at least 18 years.
  • You should have a high school diploma, or a GED.
  • You will need to complete a four week course at a vocational college.
  • Check your background through the Department of Licensing.
  • Register annually by paying $20

Also, you will need to obtain a business license and workers' compensation insurance.

What happens if a handyman causes harm and I'm not satisfied with his work?

You must immediately notify the manager if anything goes wrong during the project. It's best to write down exactly what happened and include photos of the problem area. Contact your insurance company to file a claim.

What qualifications do I need to be a handyman?

A handyman's most important attribute is patience. Additionally, you should have knowledge of plumbing, electrical systems, and carpentry.

You will find that there are many jobs available for those who are qualified, but if you don't know what they are, then you may not qualify.

You might want to consider getting training from a school specializing in these courses.

Does a handyman make suggestions about how to improve my home?

Absolutely! A handyman is skilled in all aspects of home maintenance and repair. A handyman knows what to fix and what not. Do not hesitate to seek advice whenever you are in need.

How to Replace a Broken Window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. This repair will take only 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean your new glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Let the caulking dry overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
