How To

How to Replace a Broken Window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
