How To

How do you replace a broken window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean the new glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Let the caulking set overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
