How To

How do you replace a broken window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
