How To

How to Replace a Broken Window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. This repair will take only 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Next, move on to the next pane and press it against the frame before attaching it. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Let the caulking set overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
