How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
