How to replace a broken window

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. If you don't know how to replace broken glass, you could cause more damage to your home. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fiveth step: Seal the repair area

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Let the caulking dry overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
